THE-102 Acting I: Introduction to Acting

An introductory course in acting and performance technique, designed to develop students' awareness of and capabilities in the acting process, and to foster an understanding of theatre as a valuable area of human endeavor. The course will introduce basic communication skills, including physical and vocal presence in front of an audience and will develop acting skill through the use of regular warm-ups, improvisational, imaginative and ensemble building theatre exercises as well as beginning scene study and monologue performance. Open to all students.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Analyze actors' performances with critical awareness, and using the appropriate terminology orally and in writing.
  2. Participate in physical, vocal, and mental exercises to free the body, mind, and imagination for creative expression.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to collaborate with classmates on classroom exercises and the development of performances.
  4. Participate in rehearsal and performance techniques in the development of partnered-scenes as well as a memorized monologue.
  5. Complete a character analysis and be able to identify a character's objectives, conflicts, and tactics working towards their super-objective.
