ART-100 Art History: Prehistory to Middle Ages

A study of the history of the creative process and artistic expression from prehistoric art to the middle ages. Topics may include the art and architecture of Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. This course may be taken to fulfill either a humanities or social science elective. This course carries SUNY General Education Humanities and The Arts credit.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify the development of major stylistic movements from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages.
  2. Using art historical vocabulary, analyze the way in which formal elements convey meaning in a work of art.
  3. Analyze the ways in which the style and content of art is an expression of its historical context (political, social, religious, cultural).
  4. Apply knowledge of objects and styles used in earlier periods in order to interpret objects and styles of art of later periods and of today.
