CSC-250 Computing Sciences Internship
The Computing Science Internship is a degree culminating course that will provide the student with an opportunity to gain "real-world" experience. The student will apply learned skills acquired through course work in any of the computing science degree programs to a work experience. The internship will also provide an awareness of career opportunities in the computing science and information technology fields. Students gain skills in job searching, interviewing, presenting, journaling, and professional conduct. This full-time work experience provides students with skills to find a job upon graduation.

Topic Outline
It is expected that the student will undertake the Computing Sciences Internship after the completion of an appropriate sequence of computing science courses in one of the IT/IS/CS degree programs.
Before undertaking an internship, the student must meet the following criteria:
- Satisfactory completion of coursework up to the start of the internship with a GPA of 2.0 or higher
- Demonstrate to the Computing Sciences faculty a level of maturity and the ability to satisfactorily represent the College in the work place
- Secure the approval of the internship coordinator (instructor) and the student’s advisor
The following activities are required for successful completion of the internship:
- Register for CSC-250 (3 credits) You will need permission from the course instructor.
- Set up an initial meeting with the course instructor to discuss course requirements and expectations. The instructor will work with the student to provide job leads, but it is the student’s responsibility to acquire an internship opportunity.
- Upon securing an internship, complete and submit the following items before the start date of your internship:
- A job description which can be either a formal job description supplied by the workplace, or a brief written job description outlining the job tasks that you will be asked to perform
- Company address and sponsor contact information
- Internship contract (see your instructor for a copy) which must be signed by you, your employer, and the instructor
- Please Note: You CANNOT log intern hours until the contract has been signed by all parties.
- During the internship you are required to keep a journal that records the following:
- Dates worked
- Number of hours worked/Date
- A brief description of tasks attempted/accomplished which may include research needed to arrive at a solution, your observations, and any learnings
- After completing your required work hours:
- Set a date with the instructor for your formal oral presentation to the faculty
- Submit your work journal
- Submit the formal evaluation completed and signed by your internship sponsor
- Submit your written self-evaluation
Students are expected to perform duties prescribed and defined by the site sponsor and related to the approved job description. Students are expected to act in a professional manner with both the instructor of this course and the sponsor of the internship.
