COM-111 Voice and Diction
A one semester course in the improvement of the speaking voice through vocal techniques and the interpretation of literature. This course is open to all students.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Speak with voice quality that is pleasing and demonstrates effective tone production and resonation.
- Speak with controlled breathing, utilizing physiological control of the speaking organs to acquire effective rate and phrasing in the flow of words and ideas.
- Speak with proper tone initiation using physiological control over the exhalation process to acquire proper pitch control and to avoid harshness and hoarseness in the production sounds.
- Speak with clarity and force by using effective diaphragmatic control for loudness adaptation to audience and room size and acquiring control over the articulatory organs for correct pronunciation, enunciation and articulation of the sounds and words of general American speech.
- Transcribe words using the International Phonetic Alphabet and read aloud sentence written using the IPA
- Speak with good vocal variety by integrating the speech elements of rate, pitch, force and quality to acquire an effective, expressively pleasing speaking voice.
- Develop and lead a vocal warm-up for use in rehearsal, class, and performance
