SSC-205 Service Learning

An opportunity for students to learn experientially by engaging in a community service activity. Students will learn directly about the dynamics and functions of community organizations. Students will be involved in 45 hours of supervised community service.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe contemporary sociological understandings of the concept of community.
  2. Assess the role of various community organizations as they contribute to community vitality.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the role and impact of non-profit organizations and advocacy groups.
  4. Demonstrate appropriate problem solving skills applicable to a service learning experience.
  5. Recognize the importance of civic involvement in relation to community sustainability.
  6. Be able to describe the responsibilities of citizenship and be aware of service opportunities to the community.
