ENG-090 Enhanced Integrated Reading and Writing

This course emphasizes the basic rhetorical principles needed for college-level reading and writing as an integrated whole. An emphasis is placed on developing analytical and critical thinking skills and developing essays across a variety of genres and disciplines. This course is a prerequisite for English 101 for students who place into it via the placement exam. This course carries imputed (financial aid) credit. In addition, every week students will devote two hours to delving deeply into course topics. These workshops give students a chance to explore questions and practice skills that are necessary in other college courses' reading and writing assignments.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Develop rhetorical reading strategies. These strategies may include analyzing readings for items such as purpose, context, genre, style, vocabulary, modalities, and audience.
  2. Develop writing process strategies in order to write for a variety of audiences and genres. These strategies may include a variety of pre-writing and generative writing techniques along with drafting, peer reviewing, revising, and preparing polished drafts.
  3. Use grammatical conventions in a variety of writing situations.
  4. Develop strategies for integrating ideas borrowed from sources into writing projects while using academic citation.
