EMS-251 Paramedic Refresher

This New York State approved Paramedic Refresher course meets NYSDOH Bureau of EMS continuing education requirements for Paramedic recertification. It reviews the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective competencies essential to advanced life support practice. Aligned with the National EMS Education Standards and NYSDOH curriculum, the course covers patient assessment, airway management, cardiology, trauma, medical emergencies, pharmacology, special populations, and EMS operations, incorporating current protocols and evidence-based practice.

Through didactic instruction, case review, skills practice, and scenario-based training, participants strengthen clinical decision-making. Successful completion qualifies students for the New York State Paramedic Practical Skills and Written Certification Exams and may satisfy renewal requirements for expired certifications. Intended for current and expired NYS Paramedics. Credit awarded once.

Prerequisite

Students must meet all of the following requirements to register: 1. Proof of certification as a NYS Paramedic (expired or active) 2. Current American Heart Association BLS CPR certification; 3. Permission of Instructor.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate professional responsibility and wellness practices consistent with the expectations and ethical standards of the paramedic profession.
  2. Apply knowledge and skills equivalent to those taught in an initial New York State–approved Paramedic education program to safely and effectively assess, treat, and manage patients across the lifespan in the prehospital environment.
  3. Perform comprehensive patient assessments and utilize clinical judgment to identify life-threatening conditions, establish treatment priorities, and adapt care based on patient response and evolving circumstances.
  4. Demonstrate competency in advanced life support skills, including airway management, vascular access, medication administration, cardiac monitoring, and other paramedic-level interventions consistent with current standards of care.
  5. Integrate cognitive, psychomotor, and affective competencies during scenario-based patient care to support effective decision-making, communication, and teamwork.
  6. Provide care to diverse patient populations, including medical, traumatic, behavioral, and special population patients, using principles and practices consistent with those taught in a standard paramedic education program.
  7. Apply safe patient handling, transport, documentation, and communication practices in accordance with EMS system requirements and professional standards.
  8. Demonstrate competency in EMS operations and emergency response, including professional conduct, scene management, and system-based practice.
  9. Successfully complete summative cognitive and psychomotor evaluations that verify continued competency at the paramedic level.
  10. Meet eligibility requirements to participate in the New York State Paramedic Practical Skills Examination and Written Certification Examination, in accordance with New York State Department of Health policies.
