EMS-231 Advanced Standing Paramedic Original II
Advanced Standing Paramedic Original II builds upon the foundational knowledge and skills developed in Advanced Standing Paramedic Original I and focuses on advanced medical management, special populations, EMS operations, and comprehensive competency validation. Instruction emphasizes integration of cognitive knowledge, psychomotor proficiency, and affective professionalism consistent with entry-level paramedic practice.
Content includes immunologic, infectious, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, hematologic, and endocrine emergencies; geriatric and special population considerations; obstetric and gynecologic emergencies; pediatric advanced life support (PALS); and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). Students apply evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies through scenario-based laboratory instruction and progressive simulation.
Additional emphasis is placed on therapeutic communication, documentation, safe lifting and moving, pediatric transport, EMS operations, and emergency vehicle safety. The semester culminates in capstone integration, oral board evaluations, comprehensive written assessment, and summative psychomotor examination preparation, ensuring readiness for New York State Paramedic certification requirements and independent advanced life support practice.
Prerequisite
Successful completion of
EMS-230 with a C or higher.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Assess and manage complex medical emergencies involving immunologic, infectious, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, hematologic, and endocrine systems, applying pathophysiology to treatment planning.
- Integrate advanced clinical reasoning in scenario-based medical simulations, demonstrating appropriate assessment, intervention, reassessment, and transport decisions.
- Adapt assessment and treatment strategies for geriatric and special patient populations, incorporating physiological variations, comorbidities, and home care considerations.
- Manage obstetric and gynecologic emergencies, including normal and complicated deliveries, postpartum complications, and maternal resuscitation.
- Demonstrate competency in pediatric advanced life support, including systematic pediatric assessment, management of respiratory and circulatory failure, and successful completion of AHA PALS requirements.
- Perform neonatal resuscitation in accordance with current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) guidelines, demonstrating effective airway management, ventilation, and team-based neonatal care.
- Demonstrate safe patient handling, lifting and moving techniques, and age-appropriate therapeutic communication, including safe pediatric transport considerations.
- Produce accurate, thorough, and legally sound patient care documentation, reflecting clinical findings, decision-making rationale, and interventions.
- Apply principles of EMS operations, including emergency vehicle operations, scene safety, interagency coordination, and operational risk management.
- Demonstrate readiness for entry-level paramedic practice through successful completion of oral boards, comprehensive written examinations, and summative psychomotor evaluations.
- Exhibit integrated competency across cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains during capstone and summative evaluations, consistent with New York State Paramedic certification standards.
