Instructional Modalities

FLCC offers courses in multiple formats, called course types, so you can choose the learning experience that best fits your schedule, preferences, and goals. No matter the course type, every course meets the same academic standards and is taught by FLCC faculty. Understanding each type before you register helps you make an informed choice. For full details and examples, see the Course Types page at flcc.edu/academics/course-types.

  • In-Person (Face-to-Face): All instruction is delivered in person, with students and instructors meeting at a designated campus location on scheduled days and times. Best for students who value direct interaction, immediate feedback, and built-in structure.
  • Online (Asynchronous): All instruction is delivered through Brightspace, FLCC's learning management system. Students engage with course materials and complete assignments at their convenience within instructor-set deadlines. Ideal for independent learners who need maximum schedule flexibility.
  • Online (Synchronous): All instruction is delivered in real time via video conferencing at the scheduled days and times for the course. Students attend virtually at the designated times. No commute required, but attendance at set times is expected.
  • Combined Online: Instruction is delivered through a combination of asynchronous Brightspace coursework and scheduled live video sessions, offering both the flexibility of self-paced learning and the support of real-time interaction.
  • Hybrid: A combination of face-to-face instruction and asynchronous online learning. Some course components occur in person on campus, while others are completed through Brightspace. In-person session schedules are published before registration.
  • HyFlex: Students choose how they participate in each class session: in person, synchronously online via video conferencing, or asynchronously through recorded sessions in Brightspace. All sessions are conducted in person, broadcast live, and recorded for later viewing.
  • Live Dual Delivery: Instruction is delivered simultaneously to students in the classroom and students joining live online via video conferencing. All students participate together in real time, regardless of location. Well-suited for students who want a live classroom experience but face challenges attending in person.
Note: If you enroll in six or more credits in courses with an on-campus option (in-person, hybrid, HyFlex, or live dual delivery), plan to participate in on-campus activities, or live at The Suites at Laker Landing, you must meet New York State immunization requirements. Learn more on the immunization page.
