EMCR-265 Paramedic I
The Paramedic is an allied health professional whose primary focus is to provide advanced emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. This class is the first in a series intended to prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The course will cover anatomy/physiology, advanced airway management, and pharmacology/medication administration. In addition, the course includes a comprehensive presentation of cardiac and respiratory management.
Prerequisite
Must hold a minimum certification of a NYS EMT and maintain that certification throughout the entire program. Student must be accepted into the Paramedic Certification Program.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Describe the responsibilities of a paramedic within an EMS system, to include the importance of personal wellness in EMS or of acting as a healthy role model for peers.
- Explain medical, legal, or ethical decision making in the out-of-hospital environment.
- Develop a prehospital patient care plan.
- Implement a prehospital patient care plan.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of a prehospital patient care plan.
- Accomplish venous access for fluid or medication administration.
- Accomplish administration of medications using the most appropriate method.
- Establish or maintain a patent airway, while oxygenating and ventilating a patient.
- Develop a patient diagnosis in the prehospital environment, which may include performing an effective history taking, a physical examination, or appropriate available diagnostic tests.
- Identify common medical or traumatic emergency conditions.
- Identify common medical terminology or abbreviations used in the prehospital care environment.
- Perform a self-assessment to form the foundation of a personal wellness plan, which may include strengths and weaknesses for reducing risks related to personal health practices, disease processes, or injury risks.
- Demonstrate prehospital medical interventions using appropriate devices.
- Demonstrate appropriate emergency response procedures when responding to a call.
- Select appropriate infectious disease control measures relating to health and safety.
- Communicate effectively with patients, family, other emergency responders or medical personnel.
- Explain the anatomy of the human body's systems.
- Explain the functions of the human body's systems.
- Demonstrate personal safety and emergency care precautions to prevent work-related injuries or violence in the workplace.
